ARE FEATURED AUTHORS AT THE
10TH ANNUAL BALTIMORE BOOK FESTIVAL

 

Big name authors for a big celebration!  Best selling author and famed lawyer Alan Dershowitz, The Apprentice co-star and author George Ross, Rolling Stone contributing editor Touré, NBC correspondent and author Dr. Ian Smith, author and poet Nikki Giovanni, political writer and humorist Art Buchwald, and Sex and the City creator Candace Bushnell are among the notables appearing at the 10th annual Baltimore Book Festival.  From the Literary Salon to the Food for Thought Stage, the festival has cooked up something for everyone.  The mid-Atlantics premier celebration of the literary arts takes place in historic Mount Vernon Place located in the 600 block of North Charles Street, on Friday, September 23 from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.  The festival is presented by Mayor Martin O'Malley and produced by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts.  The events sponsors are The Baltimore Sun, Reading by 9, Maryland Humanities Council, Verizon, The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore Blues Society, CleanCities.com, Fox 45/WB 54, The Baltimore Times, Maryland Family Magazine, WEAA 88.9 and WYPR-FM 88.1.  The Tremont Park Hotel at East Pleasant Street and Renaissance Harborplace Hotel are the official hotels for the Festival.

The Walters Art Museum hosts Alan Dershowitz and Andrea Mitchell.  Dershowitz, one of the countrys distinguished lawyers and best-selling author, discusses The Case for Peace.  Mitchell, NBC News chief correspondent, appears with her latest release, Talking Back: ...to Presidents, Dictators, and Assorted Scoundrels.  The museum is located at the festival site at 600 North Charles Street. 

The Literary Salon presented by the Maryland Humanities Council is home to nationally known authors and panel discussions.  The festival welcomes Rolling Stone contributing editor and CNN pop culture correspondent Touré appears with his book Soul City.  The creator of Sex and the City, Candace Bushnell, appears with Lipstick Jungle set to release in September 2005.  Pulitzer Prize winner and humorist Art Buchwald takes the stage with his latest release, Beating Around the Bush. 

The Ripe Harvest Foundation presents J.L. King, Coming Up From the Down Low.  Author of The Road to Wellville, T.C. Boyle, appears with his newest book Tooth and Claw. Also, Frans Johansson, The Medici Effect; George Ross, Trump Strategies for Real Estate; and Arthur Frommer, Frommers Travel Guides discuss their releases with other authors. 

Some of the nation's most prominent chefs and cookbook authors take the Food for Thought Stage.  Appearances include Bob Kinkead, Kinkeads Cookbook.  Kinkead owns restaurants Kinkeads in Washington, D.C. and Colvin Run Tavern in Virginia.  Fernando and Marlene Divina, 2005 James Beard Foundation/Kitchenaid Book Award for best cookbook for Food of the Americas: Native Recipes and Traditions takes the stage.  Also, Steven Bruce, Serendipity 3; James Barrett and Wendy Born Smith, Metropolitan Bakery Cookbook; Patrick OConnell, Refined American Cuisine; Mark Scarbrough and Bruce Weinstein, The Ultimate Frozen Dessert Book; John Shields, Coastal Cooking; Mat Edelson, One Bite at a Time; and Kerry Dennington, This Book Cooks prepare a delicious selection from their books. 

The Ripe Harvest Foundation Stage welcomes popular African American writers and authors of books with African American themes.  Dr. Ian Smith, NBC News medical correspondent and New York Daily News columnist, discusses The Take Control Diet.  ReShonda Tate Billingsley, Help! Ive Turned Into My Mother; Vanessa Craddock, Deadly Desires; and Black Artemis participate in panel discussions and sign copies of their books.

The Childrens Bookstore Stage presented by Verizon features the nations best childrens writers and illustrators.  Author, poet, and childrens writer Nikki Giovanni and illustrator Bryan Collier appear with Rosa set to release in October 2005.  Also, author and illustrator Katie Davis, Kindergarten Rocks!; James Promios, Johnny Mutton; and Walter Wick, creator of the I Spy books with his new series Can You See What I See? Night Before Christmas discuss their latest releases. 

The CityLit Stage presents a variety of literary arts: first time authors, panels on engaging topics, tips for aspiring writers, and insight into the book business.  The stage presents John Slaughter, Brother in the Bush, Paul Mandelbaum, Garrett in Wedlock, Buzz Williams, Spare Parts and many more.

The Creative Café sponsored by Maryland State Poetry & Literary Society offers short story readings, writing workshops, and poetry slams.  Catherine E. Pugh, Mind Garden&Where Thoughts Grow; Michael Salcman, poet; John Amen, Editor of Pediestal; Mike Neff, editor of Web del Sol; and Kim Roberts, editor of Beltway appear on the Publishing in Online Magazines panel moderated by Nathan Leslie.
